Beginners One Skein Wrap/Scarf Crochet Pattern With Optional Brooch
With the holidays quickly approaching I wanted to create a pattern that was easy enough for the novice crocheter. I wanted it to be simple, inexpensive, versatile and gift worthy.
Lion Brand's Homespun yarn is the key ingredient in this pattern. The bulky weight beautifully accommodates the very large size N crochet hook, making this a quick project. The nubby texture of this yarn eliminates the need for fancy or advanced crochet stitches. The subtle color variegation creates an elegant shading effortlessly.
I couldn't decide if I should call this a wrap or a scarf but either way it's sure to be a welcomed gift. It's soft, warm and versatile. It complements any outfit from dressy to jeans and can be worn in a variety of ways. And...as an added bonus for you, this scarf only uses one skein of yarn!
I've included a quick and easy brooch with this pattern. Obviously the brooch isn't necessary but it adds a nice touch and can be used on a jacket, a tote or any number of things.
For the wrap/scarf:
* 1 skein (6oz) Lion Brand Homespun yarn. I used Mediterranean.
* Size N (10.00mm) crochet hook.
* Scissors
For the brooch:
* Pin - You can purchase the pin at your local craft store or on Etsy. They will be listed as kilt pins or brooch pins. They come in a variety of finishes.
* 3 charms.
* 3 jump rings if your charms do not come with the rings attached.
Wrap/Scarf:
Measures approx. 49" long x 9" wide
Gauge - 3 Dc = 1 1/2"
However, the gauge is not extremely important.
Abbreviations -
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single crochet
Dc = Double crochet
*Note - the ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as the first Dc*
*Ch 15
Row 1 - Dc in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch across. Ch 2, turn (14 Dc)
Rows 2 through 51 - Dc in each Dc across. Ch 2, turn. (14 Dc)
Row 52 - Dc in each Dc across. Ch2. (14 Dc)
Shell edging -
4 Dc in the same stitch as the Ch 2.
You will be working along the side of the scarf now. Rather than working in the top of the Dc's, you will be working around the Dc's which are now horizontal.
. Repeat from < to > all the way down the side ending with Sc in last Dc. (There will be 25 shells along the edge, not counting the first shell at the beginning)
Now you will work along the bottom edge, working in the Ch stitches of the foundation Ch.
5 Dc in the first Ch. Skip 1 Ch, Sc in next Ch. Skip 1 Ch, 5 Dc in next Ch. Skip 1 Ch, Sc in next chain. Skip 1 Ch, 5 Dc in next Ch. Skip 1 Ch, Sc in next Ch. Skip 2 Ch's, 5 Dc in last Ch.
(There will be 4 shells along the bottom)
Working along the long edge now
Repeat from < to > all the way down the side ending with a Sc in the last Dc.
(There will be 25 shells along the edge)
Working along the top now 5 Dc in the next Dc, Skip 1 Dc, Sc in the next Dc. Skip 1 Dc, 5 Dc in the next Dc. Skip 1 Dc, Sc in the next Dc. Skip 1 Dc, 5 Dc in the next Dc. Skip 1 Dc, Sc in the next Dc. Skip 2 Dc, join with a slip stitch in the 1st Dc of the next shell.
(There will be 4 shells along the top)
Fasten off, weave in ends.
There are a total of 58 shells along the edges of the scarf.
Assemble the brooch:
My glass leaf charms have rings already attached so I simply opened the rings, attached the leaves to the brooch and closed the rings. Use jump rings to attach your charms if necessary.
Assembly done :)
Here are a few examples on how to wear the wrap/scarf. I'm sure you will think of many more.
Worn as a wrap using the brooch in the center.
Worn as a loose scarf with the brooch near the top.
Worn as a tighter, more traditional scarf using the brooch at the shoulder.
Worn as a scarf with the brooch at the center.
Worn as a traditional scarf with the brooch at the bottom for embellishment only.
Worn as a cowl without the brooch.
I attached the brooch to both ends creating an infinity scarf and wrapped it completely around the neck once. It could easily wrap around the neck twice.
